Flu outbreak closes all schools in Kitimat

THE COAST Mountains School District has closed every school in Kitimat due to a high absentee rate from flu symptoms.

Mount Elizabeth Secondary had been closed due to an absentee rate of 40 per cent of the school's population last week. This week elementary schools experienced a similar scenario, causing the city wide closure.

Kitimat has a total of five schools within the district and at this time schools will not reopen until Monday Nov. 9.

The district has reported that not all absentees are due to the flu, but after a consultation with Northern Health they've decided to close all schools in order to minimize exposure and to reduce the cycle of transmission.

Students, staff and parents are being advised to isolate themselves as much as possible over the next few days.
