A five-month-old toy poodle was killed on the Galloping Goose trail Tuesday morning after being attacked by a large dog.

Around 9 a.m., an elderly woman was walking her puppy along the trail between Saanich municipal hall and Saanich Road near Swan Lake.

Her dog was on a leash when they were approached by a pair of large, off-leash dogs coming towards them, accompanied by two or three men.

One of the dogs grabbed the puppy and shook it violently in its mouth. When it released the toy poodle, the men took off with the dogs.

None of the men offered assistance to the woman or her puppy.

The puppy died before the woman was able to make it to home to call Saanich police.

The dog that attacked the puppy is described as being large with white fur, possibly a Labrador. The second large dog is described has having black fur with some white markings, possibly a collie.

The elderly woman was extremely distraught following the incident. No details about any of the men were provided.

The woman and her puppy were travelling eastbound along the Goose, and it is believed the men continued travelling westbound after the attack.

Anyone familiar with the dogs or their owners are asked to contact Saanich police at 250-475-4321 Ext. 4360.
