Olympic medalist relives the chills watching the torch

Even athletes who’ve been in the midst of Olympic competition experienced chills while watching the relay.

“The relay’s a great opportunity for all of Canada to get a sense of the Olympics,’’ said former Brentwood College student Scott Frandsen, who rowed in the last two Summer Olympics in Athens and Beijing. “A lot of these people won’t make it over to Vancouver.

“It’s amazing how excited people get for it. I remember seeing the torch in ’88 in Calgary. It totally made a big influence on me.’’

Frandsen, 29, is part of an RBC Olympian program that hires athletes currently in training and those who are recently retired. He is presently suffering from a herniated disc in his back, but isn’t ruling out a return for the next Summer Olympics.

“I’m doing this for a year to get some experience,’’ he said. “If my back gets better, I’ll think about coming back.’’

Frandsen is enjoying the chance to see another side of business and all the behind-the-scenes activity that goes into the Olympic movement. He still has age on his side that could extend his competitive life.

“The average age of rowing gold medalists is 29 years of age,’’ pointed out Frandsen’s former coach at Brentwood Tony Carr, who was at Mill Bay Centre to bask in the torch celebration.
