A man walking along the dock at Palms Harbourside Marina on Stewart Avenue Friday got an unwelcome shock when he slipped and fell into the water.

Bob Simpson, deputy fire chief of operations with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said the dock was high where the elderly man fell in. While he could grip the dock above his head, he couldn’t pull himself out.

After the man’s wife tried unsuccessfully to help him out of the water, she called 911. Fire crews arrived just before 8 p.m. and hauled the man out of the water.

Simpson said the man was suffering mild hypothermia, but was able to walk himself to the ambulance, where he was treated and then released.
