A deadly, accidental fire claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman this Halloween.

According to police and fire officials, the fire broke out in the early morning hours of Oct. 31 on 4th Street SW. Though the blaze was quickly contained by Cranbrook fire crews, the young woman inside suffered serious smoke inhalation and was rushed to Cranbrook Regional Hospital. She died not long after.

Investigators have already determined the fire began on the kitchen stove, leading smoke and super-heated gases to spread quickly to the rest of the home.

Cranbrook RCMP are taking this tragedy to remind people to ensure all smoke detectors are in working order and checked regularly.
