Port Alberni woman killed in Highway 19 crash

A 53-year-old Port Alberni woman is dead after a car accident on Highway 19.

The accident happened about 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, north of the Cook Creek intersection, RCMP Cpl. Brian Brown said.

The woman was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am south on Highway 19 when she lost control of her car, crossed the grassy median and hit an oncoming northbound Chevrolet pickup.

The woman driving the Pontiac was killed instantly, and the 41-year- old pickup driver from Ladysmith was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Comox with non life threatening injuries, Brown said.

Speed and a substantial amount of standing water on the road are contributing causes in the accident, he said.

The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours while a police traffic analyst conducted an investigation.

Police remind drivers to drive according to the weather and to slow down in heavy rains when weather conditions worsen.

Four Port Alberni residents have been killed in car accidents this month.
