Elk Lake boathouse upgrade gets Federal funding

A $1.1-million upgrade to the Elk Lake Rowing Centre will go ahead with the federal government picking up half the tab.
The funding was announced Friday, just after the centre's rowers took part in Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay, passing the flame from boat to boat on the water.
Saanich-Gulf Islands MP Gary Lunn, who also serves as the minister of state for sport, said it was a fitting day to announce the government's $550,000 contribution from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program.
The Victoria Rowing Society will pay the other half of the upgrades, including an extension of the existing boat bays, a new indoor fitness training area, a new boat repair workshop and washroom refurbishments.
