A young Cranbrook girl is recovering in Calgary’s Childrens’ Hospital after being struck by a police truck Thursday night.

According to RCMP Sgt. M.E. Jorgenson, an officer was on routine patrol around 9 p.m. as the girl and an acquaintance walked across 11th Street South, near 2nd Avenue.

Driving a marked police truck, the officer hit the 11-year-old girl, but missing the other youth. The victim suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Cranbrook Regional Hospital before being medevaced to Calgary.

Sgt. Jorgenson said Victim Services is offering assistance to the victim’s family and schoolmates. The officer involved in the collision is said to be “very distressed” as well.

It’s unknown whether the children attended a function at Parkland middle school earlier that night. The victim was said to be wearing dark clothing.
