Abbotsford man shot to death in dispute

An Abbotsford man is dead after being shot during a dispute at a home on Sumas Prairie Tuesday night.

Police got a 911 call just prior to 10 p.m. about a fight going on in the 3800 block of the Inter-Provincial Highway and that there was a firearm in the house.

Officers arrived to find a 32-year-old man dead from gunshot wounds and three other occupants in the home.

One man in particular, also from Abbotsford, has been taken into custody as a person of interest, said Abbotsford Police Const.Ian MacDonald.

"It's definitely not random and it's definitely not gang or drug related," he said.

Police have attended the home on a number of times, but not for high level criminal activity, he said.

"We've been there over a dozen times in the last couple of years for various reasons, none of them involving gangs or drugs."

Investigators haven't released the name of the victim or the suspect, and are still trying to piece together what precipitated the shooting.

A neighbour said he didn't hear or see anything Tuesday night until he saw police officers around 10 p.m.

Three people, two men and a woman, were renting the rural property, he said.

He spoke to one of the residents named "Rob", who did work as a mechanic, that same evening around 8 p.m. and everything seemed fine.

This is the second shooting in Abbotsford within a week.

Jaswant "Billy" Rai, brother to NDP candidate Bonnie Rai, was gunned down on Spallin Avenue last Tuesday.

Rai had a criminal record that tied him to gang associates, including Godwin Cheng who has links to the Bacon Brothers.

The most recent incident is the seventh homicide in Abbotsford this year.

Four of the murders are tied to the spiral of gang violence afflicting the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
