District of North Vancouver firefighters recovered the body of a 53-year-old North Vancouver man Monday morning from the Capilano River.
According to DNV Fire Rescue Service assistant chief Mike Adams, crews responded to a 911 call around 8 a.m. Monday along with police, BC Ambulance paramedics and North Shore Rescue.
A witness reported seeing a fisherman fall nearly 15 feet into the water at the Cable Pool, resurface momentarily then disappear, Adams said.
According police, the man slipped and fell while casting his line into the water. The witness, who was fishing next to the man at the time, alerted staff at the nearby fish hatchery, who called 911.
Fire crews did an initial search downstream from the shore, then put members into the water to search the area where the fisherman fell.
While firefighters conducted the search, members of North Shore Rescue were staged at their Capilano Watershed station, preparing to assist in the search by helicopter and kayak, said NSR team leader Tim Jones.
"When it was ascertained that the subject was found, district fire did the body recovery," Jones said. "And we were stood down."
Adams said firefighters in the water found the man near where he fell, about 12 feet underwater. While firefighters don't have any diving capability, he said the crews improvised with some equipment from their trucks.
"We attempted a recovery, we were successful," he said.
The body was transferred to BC Ambulance paramedics.
Police haven't released the identity of the man.
"They haven't done the next of kin notification yet," said North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Marlene Morton.
