Allergic reaction slowed by officers' response
Two Langley RCMP officers on a dinner break at Eastside Mario’s in Walnut Grove saved a staff member from having a severe allergic reaction on Saturday, June 27.
Around 11:30 p.m., the two police officers were called on after a staff member inadvertently swallowed a walnut and was already indicating his throat was swelling.
It turned out the employee is highly allergic to nuts and indicated his throat was swelling and tingling and his lips were swelling as well. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency often affecting the respiratory system, impairing breathing. While the employee normally carries an ‘epi-pen’ to correct the life threatening emergency, he didn’t have it with him on this night, said police.
One of the officers retrieved his medical kit from his police vehicle which contained an epi-pen. He was able to use this pen to correct the condition.
The employee immediately felt better from the medication, but was still transported to hospital by BC Ambulance Service. The corporal who gave him the epi-pen later went to the hospital and confirmed the employee was doing much better.
