North Okanagan residents are urged to learn more about avalanches.

AdventureSmart will hold an avalanche awareness event at Silver Star Mountain Resort Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Summit Chair.

"We will be promoting search and rescue prevention to skiers, boarders and mountain visitors, focusing on avalanche awareness and being prepared," said Sandra Riches, AdventureSmart co-ordinator.

"AdventureSmart increases the public's awareness to help reduce the number and severity of these incidents in B.C. We offer free outdoor safety programs to anyone who is interested in personal preparedness, trip planning, training and taking essential gear."

Avalanche Canada and Silver Star Mountain Resort are part of the awareness event.
