The Abbotsford drug squad executed a large-scale raid against seven industrial properties in connection to large-scale marijuana grow operations with possible links to organized crime on Friday.

Blocking off streets and warning nearby businesses, police executed seven warrants throughout the day Friday at properties bordered by Peardonville Road and Wheel Avenue.

The raids involved up to 30 uniformed officers that included the Abbotsford drug squad and members of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (MIERT), said Const. Casey Vinet.

“The search warrants follow a one-month investigation into the activities of individuals believed to be connected to the large-scale marijuana trade,” he said.

“At this point we have not made any direct links to organized crime, but given the scale of the operation we fully expect that it is.”

Police arrested five men and one woman in a marijuana grow-op bust involving seven properties in an industrial/commercial area of the city.

Two units at 30970 Wheel Ave., four units at 30991 Peardonville Rd and one unit at 30590 Progressive Way were searched.

Evidence of marijuana production has been uncovered at each of the locations and charges are expected.

More than 1,830 marijuana plants were found in one of the units on Wheel Avenue, Vinet said.

The six suspects, ranging in age from their mid 20s to mid 30s, are in custody. Two are known to police, said Vinet.

One of the men, age 32 and born in England is being held on a federal immigration warrant.

He is also facing production and trafficking charges as are a 29-year-old female and 32-year-old male.

The pair are also facing three counts each of careless storage of a firearm and two counts of unathorized possession of a firearm.

Vinet told the media on Friday that it was a complex case, and police were still gathering evidence.
