Crews back at wildfire near Terrace, B.C.

CREWS continue to suppress a wildfire just east of Terrace this morning, one of eight reported yesterday and one of six of more than 10 hectares in size in the region.

The fire, 7km east of Terrace in the Copper River area, was estimated late last night to be 20 hectares in size.

To ensure the safety of the public and firefighters, the Northwest Fire Centre is asking people to avoid the West Copper Forest Service Road and surrounding area.

Helicopters, airtankers and ground crews were at the location yesterday.

With the fire danger rating at "high" to "extreme" in most of the Northwest Fire Centre, the Wildfire Management Branch urges B.C. residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution while out camping or enjoying the backcountry. Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and unnecessarily divert firefighters and other critical resources away from naturally occurring fires.

A campfire ban remains in effect for many parts of the region.

There's been an increase in fire actvitiy in the province this month resulting in crews from as far away as Ontario and Australia coming in to assist provincial firefighters.
