Facts remain foggy about how a Duncan driver avoided serious injuries Saturday morning when his vehicle hit a ditch along Henry Road near Chemainus.

Cpl. Krista Hobday of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said Monday the mishap happened at around 1 a.m. when the

19-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries to his face.

He was taken by ambulance to Cowichan District Hospital, not by helicopter and previously believed by local officials, notes Hobday.

On the weekend, Duncan fire chief Mike McKinlay said he heard talk on his pager around 1 a.m. describing how a vehicle had hit a pole on Henry Road, and that an air ambulance was called while first responders arranged a landing site nearby.

Chemainus fire chief Neil Rukus was unavailable for comment.

Witnesses are asked to call the police at 250-748-5522.
