A barn, vehicles, hay, tools and other items went up in flames early Thursday morning.

Vernon firefighters were called to a Pottery Road property at about 4:30 a.m. after the fire was discovered by the tenants on the site.

"I saw the blaze on the reflection on the wall," said Rick Wallas, who was in the adjacent home.

"There was total red and crackling. I jumped out and came running out."

The burning hay has led to a cloud of smoke hovering over much of Vernon.

The cause of the fire is not known and is not being described as suspicious at this time.

"It's being investigated and we're looking at all avenues," said Jack Blair, deputy fire chief.
