Water restrictions change

Greater Vernon residents have to learn a whole new routine for outdoor irrigation.

The Regional District of North Okanagan has shifted from a basic odd-even schedule for watering to only allowing irrigation on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for odd addressed numbers and Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays for even addresses. No manual sprinklers will be allowed Mondays.

“We wanted to simplify things and clarify the timelines,” said Jennifer Miles, sustainability co-ordinator.

“The odd-numbered addresses were gaining a day and the evens were losing a day in a 31-day month and some people thought that was unfair.”

Under the new normal conditions:

Automatic timer irrigation may operate between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.

Manual sprinklers (moved by hand) may be used between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and midnight.

Drip irrigation may operate anytime

Customers using a watering can or hose with spring-loaded nozzle may water anytime

There is no domestic/commercial outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

There were a few reasons for not allowing manual sprinklers Mondays.

“It’s for the equity side of things so everyone has three days,” said Miles.

“We can also better monitor our water flows.”

Miles says the new model will also allow residents to ease into tighter rules when drought occurs and to be more aware of the situation.
