Slocan Valley fires half contained
Two forest fires burning in the Slocan Valley are about halfway contained, the Southeast Fire Centre says.
The two-lightning caused fires are both burning east of Highway 6 and have each grown to 14.5 hectares.
Thirty firefighters are tackling the Enterprise Creek fire, 8.5 km south of Silverton, which is now considered 50 per cent contained, while 20 firefighters are working on the Monument Creek fire 11.5 kilometres south of Slocan, which is 45 per cent contained.
They are being supported by two helicopters.
“It’s really steep terrain and heavy timber,” information officer Jordan Turner said this morning. “Crews have been working hard to get this taken care of. The community would have seen quite a few air tankers the last few days.”
Neither fire poses a threat to structures or communities.
Turner said not much other fire activity was reported over the weekend, but thunderstorms are expected over the next few days before sunny and hot weather returns at the end of the week.
He asked the public to be careful with campfires.
To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
