Man kidnapped from Surrey escapes in Pitt Meadows

A 19-year-old man managed to escape from his abductors Wednesday night following a car crash on a lonely rural road in Pitt Meadow.

Ridge Meadows RCMP and the Pitt Meadows Fire Department rushed to Sharpe Road around 9:20 p.m. after receiving a call about a car in a ditch.

Upon arrival, officers found a young man nearby suffering from minor injuries.

Cpl. Bert Paquet said the man, who is known to police, alleged that he was abducted earlier in the evening from somewhere in Surrey.

Surrey RCMP’s General Investigations Team interviewed the man and other possible witnesses to confirm details and identify potential suspects.

“The investigation is still in its very early stages, however, officers believe this to be a targeted incident,” Paquet added.

RCMP have yet to figure out who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash but are sure it wasn’t the victim. Police are still investigating what caused the car to flip into a drainage ditch.

Paquet said investigators believe the abducted man’s claims are credible.

“Based on the circumstances of this incident and the victim’s state of mind, we believe he is telling the truth.”

Police are still trying to establish how many people were involved in the kidnapping and their identity.

Paquet said it is too early to say if the incident is connected to the drug trade or gangs.

The Haney chapter of the Hell’s Angels has a club house on McKechnie Road, not far from where the man escaped.

Paquet said RCMP don’t believe the kidnapping is connected to the club but “are exploring all possible avenues of investigations.”
