The RCMP want to speak to a person who may have been present at Vernon’s latest suspicious fire.

A surveillance photo of an individual has been released after someone set garbage ablaze under a sheriff’s vehicle at the courthouse Thursday at about 10:30 p.m.

Police were able speak to witnesses in the area about the fire.

“Witnesses said that a male wearing a grey hoody, black hat and riding a bike was noticed riding away from the courthouse a short time before the fire was noticed,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

Besides the RCMP, firefighters were on scene Thursday.

“Whether it was someone playing a prank, it’s difficult to know,” said Jack Blair, Vernon deputy fire chief.

“The RCMP are treating it very seriously.”

RCMP officers were able to extinguish the fire before any major damage was done to the vehicle.

This is the 16th suspicious fire in Greater Vernon and Spallumcheen in about the last month.

It’s not known if the fires are linked.

Beyond the threat to property and lives, there is a concern that the suspicious fires are diverting firefighting resources.

“They are very time-consuming incidents,” said Blair.

Anyone with information about the fire at the courthouse is asked to call the Vernon RCMP.
