Sidewalk tables allowed for Esplanade
Tables, chairs and umbrellas are being allowed on the newly expanded sidewalk in Harrison Hot Springs, with a decision made just in time for the street's grand reopening tomorrow morning.
A temporary sidewalk extension program policy has come before Harrison council numerous times throughout May and June, with some councillors hesitant on moving forward.
"Originally I was opposed," Coun. John Buckley said at the June 2 meeting. "Conceptually I was impressed but concerned about the width of the sidewalk. But I'm willing to give it a try for the year."
However, Coun. Zoltan Kiss continued to vote against the policy that will allow restaurants and stores to expand their services onto the sidewalk. He stated he believes it is against the Official Community Plan.
Businesses will have to apply for a temporary sidewalk extension, and pay a security deposit and license fee. Licenses will be granted from March 1 to Oct. 1 each year, with all accessories to be removed from the sidewalk by Nov. 15.
Nothing is to be physically anchored to the municipal sidewalk surface, and a site plan would have to be approved by municipal staff.
A grand opening for Esplanade's improvements is planned for Friday, June 13 at 11:30 a.m., immediately following an opening for the Water Treatment Plant at 11 a.m.
