A cottage on Shawnigan Lake was severely damaged by fire Friday night, the lake's volunteer fire chief says.

Keith Shields said 15 firefighters used various trucks to contain and snuff the fully-involved fire, keeping it from spreading to a nearby garage, and home off Lavinia Road.

"The knock-down took 15 minutes," he said, noting there were no injuries during the inferno. "We drew water from the lake."

The cottage's owner lives in Victoria. Shields believed the wooden structure was insured.

"There's definitely some major damage," he said. "Let's put it this way: the basement's still OK."

Crews were on scene for about 2 1/2 hours in total, Shields noted.

Cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
