Fatal accident shuts down Highway 97 south

UPDATED THURSDAY, 10:15 A.M.:

The North Okanagan Traffic Services are able to confirm the driver of the Subaru who died in the crash yesterday was 64 and from Lake Country.

The two men in the truck were both from Vernon. The driver,26, was treated and has since been released from hospital. The passenger, 24, remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

UPDATED 8:30 P.M. Vernon RCMP have released more information about Wednesday's accident.

RCMP say a southbound Subaru appeared to veer left into oncoming Highway 97 traffic near the south end of Kalamalka Lakeview Drive and collided head-on with a pick-up truck.

The driver of the Subaru, an Okanagan area man, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck and his passenger were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The highway reopened to traffic at 6:15 p.m., nearly four hours after the accident.

UPDATED; 5:30 P.M.  Police have no new information to release at this time about the accident. Updates are expected later this evening..

Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP are on the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident on Highway 97 south at Birnie Road.

The accident happened at around 2:30 p.m. and involved a truck and a car.

Police are requesting motorists stay clear of the area so they can investigate this crash.

The highway is expected to be closed for a couple of hours.

Motorists are asked to take Commonage Road and Bailey Road to get around the crash scene.
