Local teachers hit the picket line
Teachers from SD51 (Boundary) are picketing outside of local schools as part of phase one of teacher job action. The picketing is part of rotating strikes throughout the province.
Both sides in the teacher’s strike have settled in and are firing shots at the other side.
The B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) announced last week that they would be entering phase two of job action which includes rotating strikes.
Today (Wednesday) the teachers in the Boundary are on the picket line for the first time as they picket for a better deal with the government, as well as smaller class sizes and better composition.
The government struck back by deciding to lock out teachers and dock teacher wages by 10 per cent for time missed.
“All schools in School District 51 (SD51) will be closed on Wednesday,” said SD51 superintendent Kevin Argue on Monday. “Buses will not be running.”
Argue said the lockout means teachers will be locked out of schools 45 minutes before the work day and 45 minutes after the work day.
Argue said that some field trips may be affected by the job action.
“The push from both sides are affecting field trips,” he said. “Teachers are in a real difficult spot right now. A lot of those types of activities—they’re looking at whether to go ahead with them or not. I don’t think there have been any decisions yet. But it’s looking less likely those things will occur.”
Argue confirmed that the elementary district track meet has been cancelled.
“The elementary district track meet was set for this Thursday,” said Argue. “We have the rotating strike day on Wednesday, which is a big day for preparation. Again, teachers would be in a place where the union is asking one thing; What BCPSEA’s lockout meant was another. We just didn’t want that angst in the system.”
Argue said he did hope that local schools would have their own track meets.
He added that no graduation ceremonies or events have so far been cancelled.
Argue expects that rotating strikes will continue next week unless there is a settlement. He’s not sure if the strike day for the Boundary would be Wednesday again or not.
