UPDATE: Mission RCMP tight-lipped about first murder of the year

A Mission man is being sought by local Mounties in connection with Mission’s first murder of the year.

Shane Charles Buckner, 32, is facing a manslaughter charge, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The victim, 59-year-old Thomas Dale Hopfner, known as Dale, suffered substantial head injuries in the 33000 block of North Railway Avenue, according to police, who are releasing few details about the case.

The incident happened in the early afternoon hours of July 18. Hopfner, who was also a Mission resident, was taken to MSA Hospital in Abbotsford where he died the next day from his injuries.

Police are not saying whether the victim and suspect were known to each other, what precipitated the incident or if there was a weapon involved.

While the homicide happened more than a week ago, police only sent out a news release on July 29.

Mission RCMP Const. Amanda Fallis told The Record the delay was simply due to the fact media liaison officers from both the Mission detachment and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team were away on holidays.
