Alberni relay cancelled again

With the Relay for Life cancelled for a second year in the row due to low registration numbers, the Canadian Cancer Society has proposed a new cancer survivors’ celebration.

This new event will take place  July 12 at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, next to Bob Dailey Stadium. The society is hosting a Survivor Celebration instead to honour and recognize those who have fought cancer.

“We know that one of the touching moments of Relay is when all the community’s survivors come together to walk the track and we didn’t want to lose that experience this year,” explains Tracy Berg, community giving coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Vancouver Island Region.

“We heard feedback from the community including our volunteers, saw the declining participation and felt a need to reenergize the spirit of Relay in the area.”

The Survivor Celebration will take place at 12 p.m. and involve a light lunch at the Multiplex and then survivors walking a lap around the track to celebrate their survivorship.

Interested participants can RSVP to tberg@bc.cancer.ca or call the local Port Alberni unit office at 250-724-2912.

“We are excited to be doing something for survivors in Port Alberni this year,” adds Berg. “We hope the community will join us in celebrating these survivors on July 12.”
