A 27-year-old woman from Nanoose Bay has died after her car went over an embankment on Bamfield Road, 24 kilometres south of Port Alberni.
The woman had been driving a righthand drive 1992 Mitsubishi van on Sunday. "It appears as though she lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the left side of the roadway, hitting a tree," Port Alberni RCMP Staff Sgt. Lee Omilusik said in a statement.
The tree landed on the roof of the right side of the vehicle, which continued down a 15-foot embankment, landing on its left side. "A tow truck driver who was returning to Port Alberni on an unrelated incident noticed the lights of the vehicle over the embankment and contacted police," Omilusik said.
There were no witnesses to the accident, he added. A traffic reconstruction analyst attended the scene to determine what happened to the vehicle.
Police have not released the woman's name, pending notification of next of kin.
Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to contact their local police station or CrimeStoppers.
