Small cell tech comes to Mission
Telus will be using small cell technology to improve wireless communications in Mission.
Beginning next month, the telecommunications company will be installing 100 small cell units on 50 existing poles in Mission’s urban area. These units are 30 cm by 27 cm, use about 140 watts of electricity and emit less than five watts of radio frequency — about the same amount of power as the handheld radios used by emergency responders, according to a letter addressed to the district from Telus.
The units will be installed on poles already used by Telus, and the company will be negotiating with the district to also use municipal infrastructure, such as light posts.
Because the units are being mounted on existing infrastructure, community consultation is not required under federal guidelines, however, during installation, Telus will have information sheets for those interested.
