Okanagan math competition extends registration deadline

Mathematically inclined students in Grades 8 through 12 (including homeschoolers) have until March 28 to register for the Okanagan Valley competition’s preliminary round, which takes place on April 2 in the students’ participating schools.

“Contests like this give students with an interest in mathematics an opportunity for recognition for their achievements and something to strive for,” said Clint Lee, BCSSMC provincial coordinator and Okanagan College mathematics professor.

The contest is divided into two categories: juniors (Grade 8-10) and seniors (Grade 11-12). A standardized set of questions for each category, prepared by a provincewide committee of college and university mathematicians, will be administered to students at their schools.

The top three to six finishers from each school will be invited to attend the final round on May 2 at UBC Okanagan. Finalists compete for top honours, cash prizes, and, for the senior with the highest score, a cash prize of $200 and a one-semester tuition scholarship to either Okanagan College or UBC Okanagan, to a maximum value of $3,000.

Co-sponsored by Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan, the contest was created in 1990 to promote an interest in mathematics at the junior and senior secondary school level in the Okanagan region. Today, 10 identical regional math competitions occur each spring. Funding from Mathtoons Media, the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC, and the Canadian Mathematical Society supports some of the activities of BCSSMC for the Okanagan region.
