A pregnant woman and her two young sons escaped serious injury after being hit by a pickup truck while crossing the intersection at 10th Avenue and Roger Street.

Emergency personnel were called to the intersection at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Saturday night, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

A 26-year old woman and her sons, ages six and eight, were crossing Roger Street in a crosswalk with the green light. The 81-year old driver of the north-bound pickup truck didn’t see the trio and hit them as he was turning left onto Roger Street from 10th Avenue, also on a green light.

The woman and her sons were transported to West Coast General Hospital. The sons suffered only scrapes and bruises and were released. The woman was kept overnight for observation and was released on Sunday.

“Fortunately the driver slowed down as he was turning. If he didn’t then this could have had a very tragic outcome,” Allan said.

The woman was wearing dark clothing which made it harder for the driver to see them. Despite this investigators determined that there was adequate lighting in the intersection at the time of the accident, Allan said.

Charges haven’t been recommended but the investigation remains open, she added.
