Cop shop site recommendation expected next week
We could learn the location of the new North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP station as soon as Wednesday.
North Cowichan has yet to confirm a site for the new station. But the ground rules are in place.
At its Feb. 5 meeting, North Cowichan council set the criteria that will influence those involved with the site selection for a new RCMP headquarters.
A recommendation for a site, which could include one of two options on Beverly Street or a third on Ford Road, is expected at council's next meeting Feb. 19.
Key management staff, including the RCMP Inspector, will evaluate the three sites.
They will take into consideration: RCMP security assessment; site development costs (including land purchase); disaster response capability; environmental impact and First Nations' considerations; access to Trans-Canada Highway; proximity to other emergency responders and social services, and proximity to public transit and urban core.
"Council decided to accept and weigh all criteria equally, while acknowledging that the RCMP Security Assessment had to have a passing grade before proceeding to rate the rest of the criteria," said Mayor Jon Lefebure.
