Avalanche danger closes Trans-Canada out of Revelstoke
The Trans-Canada Highway is closed in both directions out of Revelstoke due to high avalanche danger in the region today.
The Trans-Canada is closed west of Revelstoke until about noon on Jan. 13 for avalanche control.
East of Revelstoke, the highway is closed all the way to Golden due to high avalanche hazard until 2–4 p.m. An update is scheduled for noon.
An advisory from DriveBC warns of rain on compact snow causing slippery conditions on the highway west of Revelstoke and on Highway 23 north from Shelter Bay to Mica Dam.
"Drivers are encouraged to drive with caution and allow additional travel time to reach your destination," the advisory states.
The Trans-Canada is also closed from Golden to Field until Tuesday afternoon due to the high avalanche hazard.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre rated the avalanche danger as high in the alpine and considerable at treeline and below treeline in both the North and South Columbia forecast regions.
In Glacier National Park, the avalanche danger is rated as extreme in the alpine and high in the treeline and below treeline.
A weather system over the weekend brought lots of snow and warming temperatures to the region, creating the high avalanche hazard.
