Male youth taken from silver bridge during Wednesday's incident
A male youth was uninjured after being removed from Duncan's silver bridge Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Chris Swain says.
North Cowichan/Duncan detachment was told of a person on the bridge and attended, along with North Cowichan's south-end fire crew.
Finding no one on the dark bridge, Mounties feared the person had jumped into the frigid water.
North Cowichan's south-end firefighters used their Zodiac rescue boat to search under the bridge while a police dog squad was also called to find the person before the youth told police he was still on the bridge.
"We went out there thinking someone was trying to jump. No one did jump," Swain stressed.
"The person on the bridge identified himself, and we dealt with it appropriately."
Swain declined to give details about why the youth was on the bridge.
He was not charged, and was taken for assessment, he said.
"This is not a criminal matter."
