It's a girl!

The first baby born at Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers in 2014 was born Jan. 1 at 5:49 p.m. to Ryan and Keri Ewald, of Houston.

We talked about [the possibility of having the New Year's baby] lots,” Keri said. “We joked about it.

We're pretty excited,” Ryan said.

Rowan weighed in at 5 pounds, 12 ounces and joins sister, Blake, who is a year-and-a-half.

It's very special,” said BVDH health services administrator Cormac Hikisch. “We all celebrate the New Year as a community and having a new baby in the first couple days of the year is pretty special.”

The first baby born in Northern Health was a girl in Prince George.

The first in British Columbia was delivered at Victoria General Hospital at 12:01 a.m.
