Port Alberni RCMP are saying a fire that heavily damaged an equipment storage shed on Russell Field across from Echo Centre is arson.

Fire ripped through the shed in the late afternoon on Dec. 30.

The initial investigation of the incident suggests that the fire was caused by arson, Const. Shelly Schedewitz said in a news release.

The fire damaged the shed beyond repair, and it is now slated for demolition by the city. Equipment and supplies used by the Alberni Valley Youth Soccer Association were also damaged.

Soccer association president Brad Berry said he wouldn't know until Tuesday how much of the equipment was salvageable.

Police want the public's help in identifying the person or person’s responsible for this senseless crime. If anyone witnessed this crime, or can provide information about it, they are asked to contact the local detachment at 250-723-2424, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
