Crash claims life of Chilliwack man
A 52-year-old Chilliwack man was killed Sunday after losing control of his vehicle and slamming into a tree.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 1, one kilometre east of the Yale Road overpass.
Police say the vehicle, a 2008 Honda Civic, was eastbound on the highway when it struck a pool of water and began to hydro-plane. The driver attempted to correct the situation, but over-steered and lost control of the vehicle. The Honda left the roadway and entered the ditch where it struck a large tree on the driver’s side.
The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, died of his injuries at the scene.
Notification of next of kin has been done however, his name will not be released pending family permission.
RCMP say their initial investigation suggests weather and speed were likely factors in the crash, however they have not ruled out mechanical defects on the vehicle and driver inattention.
The Fraser Valley Traffic Services, the Office of the Provincial Coroner and the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Section are continuing their investigations.
Anyone who witnessed this collision and has not spoken to the police, is asked to contact the lead investigator Cst. Gord Standcumbe of the Fraser Valley Traffic Services at 604-702-4039.
