NWPD warns of fraud calls

New Westminster police are warning the public about someone making unsolicited calls seeking cash for a non-existent police charity.

Police said the calls are asking for donations to the NWPD anti bullying fund. The department believes the calls are originating from various numbers usually starting with 778-785-…. The caller usually asks for an amount in the $300 range and then attempt to negotiate a lesser amount if they encounter resistance.

The department said the calls are fraudulent in nature.

"The NWPD does not solicit charitable donations in this manner, nor endorse any private persons or companies to do so on their behalf, Fortunately, in the cases the NWPD are aware of no money has been lost," said a police release.

In addition, the department warned the scam might alter its tactics by changing the name of the police agency or the charity. The NWPD advises receivers of these calls should hang up and contact local police.
