Burnaby man arrested after stabbing VPD dog
A 31-year-old Burnaby man is facing charges after attacking a Vancouver police dog while officers were trying to arrest him Sunday night.
Just after 9 p.m. Sunday, Vancouver police noticed a stolen van being driven east on Hastings Street near Dunlevy Street. Officers followed it to Victoria Drive where they boxed it in and attempted to arrest the driver.
When the driver refused to follow the officers' directions, police dog Shack was deployed.
The suspect responded by grabbing a pair of scissors and stabbing the dog, whose handler then jumped in to protect his canine partner.
With the help of other officers, the suspect was eventually arrested.
Shack was taken to a veterinary hospital and treated for minor wounds. A police officer received cuts to her hand and a possible dislocated finger during the struggle.
The suspect, who is known to police, was treated for dog bites and jailed. He faces several charges including charges of intending to harm a service animal.
