Nanaimo's Hamperville needs turkey donations

The Nanaimo Christmas Hampers program is short 100 turkeys and is hoping the community can lend a hand.

A total of 460 turkeys are needed this year and according to organizers, they are behind where they have been in previous years at this time.

People wanting to help can donate $35 to the Christmas hamper program, which organizers will use to purchase turkeys, or buy a turkey and drop it off at hamper program headquarters, the former Madill building at 2560 Bowen Rd. Freezers are on site for storage.

Quality Foods shoppers who collect Q-Points can purchase a turkey for 188,000 points or tell cashiers the number of points they want to donate to Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, with points pooled together to buy turkeys.

Quality Foods shoppers can also purchase a Q-bird coupon that will be put in hampers and can be redeemed by recipients for a turkey.

Shoppers at Thrifty's Foods can transfer their points to a Thrifty's card that will be donated to the hamper program. Organizers will use the cards to buy turkeys.

Hamper registration will be ongoing until Dec. 18 with distribution taking place Dec. 19 to 21.
