Heavy flooding is likely if West Vancouver is hit by a storm at the same time as this weekend's high tides.

Until Monday and during specific times in the coming months — Jan. 2-7 and Feb. 1-3 — tides are expected to peak in West Vancouver.

Known as perigean spring tides, the Storm Surge Almanac for South Western B.C. says tides will exceeds 4.7 metres at Point Atkinson close to Lighthouse Park, according to the District of West Vancouver.

If high tides occur at the same time as a storm, the combination could result in a storm surge similar to, or even worse than, the storm event last December, which flooded buildings along the Seawall including the Silk Purse.

The District will keep the public informed on its website if a storm is expected to cause flooding. For more information, please visit the Storm Surge BC website.
