A Vernon educator is being recognized for her commitment to youth.

On Tuesday, Shawna Milller-Poitras received the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence from Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa.

Miller-Poitras works at the North Okanagan Child Care Society and she is known for connecting her students with the world beyond the classroom. She regularly visits the community garden and farmers markets and her students have developed relationships with elementary and secondary students and seniors.

Miller-Poitras also played a role in developing a children's charter of rights for Vernon.
