Updated - Alberni RCMP standoff ends
One man is in custody and a teenage female is safe after police ended a tense standoff on the Tseshaht reserve.
RCMP Emergency Response Team members raided a trailer on Omoah Place at 1:40 a.m. Saturday after several hours of trying to talk the 38-year-old man out, RCMP Const. Shelly Schedewitz said.
The man was arrested and taken into custody. A 15-year-old girl who was in the trailer at the time of the incident was unharmed and is now in the care of the USMA family services agency.
A search warrant has been executed and a subsequent examination of the residence has already yielded weapons. An investigation is ongoing and charges haven't been laid yet, she added.
The man is known to police and was under an unspecified court order at the time of the incident, Schedewtiz said.
A large breed dog that charged at police officers who initially went to the man's residence was shot at multiple times then fled. It has since been located alive and is receiving veterinary care, Schedewitz said.
Police responded to calls of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance at the trailer at approximately 7 p.m. The man refused to cooperate with police and barricaded himself in the trailer, the inside of which he proceeded to damage with a hatchet.
The Island District Emergency Response Team was called after police assessed the man's behaviour and access to weapons.
