Two men charged with luring teenagers at New West SkyTrain station
Two men have been charged with trying to lure troubled teenage girls at the New Westminster SkyTrain station into having sex and making child pornography.
Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said the men preyed on a group of kids from difficult backgrounds that regularly link up at the station by plying them with promises of money, drugs and participating in a movie.
"They knew where to go to find vulnerable kids in groups," said Drennan.
Transit Police first twigged onto the men in early September, Drennan said, when officers heard an argument between an 18-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl on the station platform. The girl had said she had sex with a 20-year-old man and the boy said she shouldn't have because he wasn't good enough for her.
That started an investigation that also uncovered another 14-year-old victim. Drennan said police are unsure if there are more victims.
Dominik Matthey Vendette, 26, of Vancouver remains in custody on two counts of sexual assault, two more of sexual touching of a person under the age of 16, two counts of procuring a minor for a sexual purpose, one of administering an intoxicant with the intent to overpower them for intercourse and another of attempting to provide child pornography.
Thomas John Robert Gain, 20, has been charged with sexual touching of a person under the age of 16 and sexual assault. He has been released on his own recognizance. Both are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 6.
Drennan said the New Westminster station has been a popular spot for street kids to hang out. But she added that's a common issue throughout the system, not just at the New Westminster station.
"It's a popular mode of transportation of kids who are up to no good. They just hang out and they can be a target or be targeting. A lot of very young people are responsible for thefts of electronic devices. We constantly monitor them, we tend to know a lot of the kids and recognize them on sight," said Drennan.
