One hour later start for SHSS students... but only sometimes
Students of Stanley Humphries Secondary School will get an extra hour, every second Monday, to wake up and finish homework.
Some Stanley Humphries Secondary School parents took to social media on Saturday, Aug. 24 to say they were "very surprised" to see a significant change to the school schedule posted on the school's website.
Starting on Monday, September 9 and continuing every second Monday after, SHSS school days will begin one hour later at 9:39 a.m., but still end at 2:53 p.m.
During what was the first hour of classes on those Mondays, the school's website explains that "…teaching and support staff will be collaborating professionally on the implementation of innovative learning initiatives…"
The notice goes on to explain that it is believed the teacher and support staff get togethers will result in "… improved student achievement and a more positive learning experience for all involved."
On these delayed Monday mornings, busses will pick up students 60 minutes later with no changes in bus routes.
As the school day will still end at the same time, 2:53 p.m., the difference has been made up by cutting classroom time.
The lunch hour on the later-start Mondays will also be 10 minutes longer (49 minutes).
The full notice can be viewed on the Stanley Humphries Secondary School website, here: http://shsscastlegar.com/
As of Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., the School District 20 website (http://www.sd20.bc.ca/Schools.html) was not showing this information on a table of school hours.
