Okanagan Indian Band pays tribute to former statesman
The Okanagan Indian Band is paying its respects to elder and statesman Tim Alexis.
The 78-year-old Alexis, who died March 14, enjoyed a long political career starting in 1977, and consecutively served until 2009.
“Tim was known for his diplomatic words of wisdom at the meeting table” said Chief Byron Louis, who served six terms with Alexis.
“He always made sure that both sides of debate were voiced and heard”.
Louis says Alexis always shared the importance on the history of the Okanagan people and the natural resources.
“Tim had stood on many accounts alongside the Okanagan chiefs to protect the water and lands, both on the ground and at the negotiating table,” said Louis.
Alexis had a passion for horses and ranching and Louis says his hard work and simplicity were values he taught his children and community.
“He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the Okanagan people,” said Louis.
“He is a mentor, diplomat and a dear friend whose gifts of leadership will be heard for many years to come.
Alexis is survived by his wife Mabel; children Sheila, Homer, Nancy, Ruby, Rose and Jonathan; sister Susan; brother Arnold; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral Service will be held today (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church on the Okanagan Indian Reserve.
