Skier from Abbotsford missing in Rockies

The Abbotsford News has learned that a man who fell down a crevasse while trekking on the Wapta Icefield northeast of Golden is from Abbotsford.

Media reports indicate that the man, whose name has not yet been released by authorities, was backcountry skiing with two others on Tuesday just before midnight when a blizzard struck.

Search and rescue crews picked up a signal from an emergency locator on Wednesday morning, but were hindered by weather conditions until yesterday.

A man and a woman who were located safe on Friday had built a shelter to stay warm, but a second man had been separated from them when he fell down a crevasse.

Crews have not heard from that man and have not yet located him, but hope to continue their search Sunday morning.

The Wapta Icefield is located in the Canadian Rockies on the B.C. side of the B.C.-Alberta border. It is shared by Banff and Yoho National Parks.
