Drumlines perform at Abby Senior
Six drumlines from the Lower Mainland gathered at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School for a workshop and concert on Saturday, March 9.
The University of Washington drumline served as guest artists and clinicians, conducting workshops for middle and high school students from Abbotsford Senior Secondary, Mennonite Educational Institute, Clayburn Middle School, Burnaby North Secondary and North Surrey Secondary.
Following the workshops, the drumlines demonstrated their skills, and performed as a group with the University of Washington drummers.
Nancy Hasiuk, director of music programs at Abbotsford Middle and Senior Secondary Schools, said drumlines are more rare in Canada than the U.S., but more and more schools are offering them in their music programs. She organized the event with the hope of making the drumlines feel less isolated.
“But, it’s interesting to see them perform, because we weren’t influenced by anyone.”
Drumlines come out of the marching band tradition and are a group of percussionists who play parades, pep rallies and athletic events. Hasiuk said she hopes watching and learning from the University of Washington drumline will encourage students to keep playing the drums.
“I hope it’s an inspiration for them to work towards.”
