Crash on Westsyde Road sends driver to hospital

A 44-year-old Kamloops man was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital on the morning of Thursday, March 7, with multiple injuries after the car he was driving northbound in the 4400-block of Westsyde Road veered off the road and crashed into a mini-van that was parked on the side of the road.

The force of the 7:30 a.m. collision pushed the parked 2003 Honda Odyssey backwards into a power pole and left the driver of the 1997 Pontiac Sunfire trapped inside his car until the jaws of life arrived at the scene.

The drivers’ door was cut free by Kamloops firefighters and the injured man was taken out of his car.

An RCMP traffic-collision investigator was called to the scene as part of the investigation.

Responding Mounties noted the roadway was wet, but not slippery, and there were no visible skid marks at the scene to indicate the driver tried to brake or steer prior to the crash.

The 4400-block of Westsyde Road is a two-lane undivided roadway with a posted speed limit of 60 km/h.

The Sunfire has been impounded by police and will undergo a complete mechanical inspection to determine if there were any defects that contributed to the crash.

Police will also be following up with medical staff to determine if there was any pre-existing medical condition on the part of the driver that may have played a role in the collision.

The owner of Honda Odyssey is a resident of the area. The vehicle was for sale and was parked at the road side for display.

Initial reports said an air ambulance landed near the scene, though it was unclear if the patient, who suffered broken limbs and head injuries when tossed from the vehicle, required air transport.
