• We’ve recently been told two sets of Cowichanians have submitted audition videos for The Amazing Race, Canadian version. Good luck to Katie and Amanda Collison and Heather and Trevor Truhn.
• Stacey Dempsey of Duncan is one of the winners of a mini iPad in a national contest put on by Sports Excellence Corporation. Dempsey entered the CCM Stay in the Game and Win contest at Eddy’s Hockey Shop in Duncan.
• Congratulations to Debbie Meiner of RE/MAX of Duncan, who, on Feb. 22 was presented with a prestigious REALTORSCare award by the the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board for “outstanding community service and professional leadership.”
• And more congratulations to ubiquitous volunteer Robert Bell, who received the Nichole Stock Community Services Award, and Lake Cowichan Summer Nights co-ordinator Mike Bishop, who was named 2012 Citizen of the Year at the Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting, Feb. 21, in Lake Cowichan.
• Duncan native (turned ex-pat frequent visitor) Justus Parmar is basking in the warm glow of a Vancouver charity event he just staged that raised more than $200,000 for the Face of Today charity. Parmar, an investment advisor with Macquarie, staged a gala with a Great Gatsby theme that attracted attention from the Province, National Post, Business in Vancouver, Hello Magazine and others.
• Cowichan Valley Green Party chairwoman Cynthia Montgomery tells us Tamara Leigh has been picked as campaign manager for candidate Kerry Davis in the upcoming May provincial election.
• Although she is already busy pursuing her post-secondary academic studies at the Kelowna campus of the University of B.C., 2012 grad Jorden Matson returned to Lake Cowichan Secondary School on Feb. 18 to receive the Governor General’s Academic Medal for 2011-2012 from school principal, Nicole Boucher for graduating with the highest grade point average from the school.
• We hear from Discovery Elementary secretary Heather Lavender that the school’s SPCA Club recently held a poster contest. Winners were Brynn Birtwistle (second, intermediate), Rylan Ross (first, primary) and Destany Yuill (first, intermediate).
