UPDATE: BC Liberals name two new candidates in Burnaby
The BC Liberals have announced candidates in the ridings of Burnaby-Deer Lake and Burnaby-Edmonds.
Family physician Dr. Shian Gu will run in Deer Lake, while businessman and education consultant Jeff Kuah will represent the party in Edmonds in the May 14 election, announced Premier Christy Clark during a speech at a Burnaby Board of Trade luncheon Thursday.
Gu is the acting director of the Burnaby Medical Centre of British Columbia and has been practising medicine in Burnaby for 14 years, according to a BC Liberal press release. He is also the founding president of the Bethune Baiqiuen Canadian Alliance, an non-profit organization that works to advance the legacy of Norman Bethune in health care and education, while promoting friendship between Canada and China.
He is known in the Chinese media as a frequent commentator on health and wellness issues.
Gu said he believes the economy and jobs are the biggest issues this election in his riding.
"I have been working in Burnaby for 14 years as a family doctor and most of my patients are in this area. I think the people need a strong voice to have representation in the B.C. government and people deserve to have a better life."
As for why Gu decided to put his busy practice aside to enter politics, he said, "I think I know what [voters] want. I want B.C. to have a strong economy and continue to grow and develop, that's why I started to run."
Jeff Kuah is a former academic advisor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and has an educational background in business management, political science and sociology. He can speak five different languages.
"My riding, they are concerned about job growth and economic stability in this province," Kuah said. "When I door-knock, this is what they want. They want jobs."
Kuah said he decided to run for the Liberals some time ago.
"I think the constituency requires a strong representative like myself that works hard towards the economy, being a businessman and a former educator I felt that I have the take to help the people in my riding."
Dr. Gu and Kuah are scheduled to be nominated by acclamation at a joint meeting on March 4 at the Bonsor Community Centre in Burnaby.
